ASCD Awarded Grant to Offer Free Virtual Teacher Networks

ASCD has been awarded a two-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to provide educators with free, ongoing virtual professional development (PD) trainings on the instructional shifts of the Common Core State Standards.

The virtual PD networks, facilitated by ASCD expert faculty and consultants, will cover math, English language arts literacy, literacy shifts for science, and literacy shifts for social science. The designated ASCD Faculty member will develop a syllabus to guide the two-year professional learning course that has been aligned to the shifts in each of the respective content areas.

The webinars will allow teachers to interact in real time with a designated faculty member, and will be archived for later access, enabling educators to participate at their convenience.

Additionally, educators will be able to engage with, and learn from, each other through virtual professional learning communities created for each strand on the ASCD EDge social networking platform, which currently has more than 60,000 registered users. ASCD EDge enables participants in each learning group to explore topics in greater depth while sharing resources with other members.

Tabtor Math Announces iPad-Based Learning Program

Tabtor Math has announced the launch of its iPad-based learning program that is personalized for every student. Tabtor Math offers an interactive learning experience with a dedicated instructor, instant feedback, engaging gaming aspect and a new way to master math concepts and strategies for problem solving.

Tabtor was first launched to a select group of students during the summer of 2012. Over the last year, Tabtor has made continuous improvements to its learning platform based on feedback from its early adopters. Tabtor Math’s Point of Learning program addresses the needs of those seeking skill development and enrichment. Parents want the ability to deliver an instructor-driven math program to their children at an affordable price, as well as be able to monitor their progress first-hand. Tabtor Math grants both of these wishes.

The iPad-based platform helps increase teacher efficiency, classroom productivity, reduces grading time and helps increase test scores, thus reducing teacher frustration and providing a sense of fulfillment, the announcement states. The program currently has more than 500 active students in the US, with over 500,000 problems solved. Given the adoption of the new Singapore Math based Common Core State Standards (CCSS) across 45 states in the U.S from this year, the demand for a math program that develops a deeper understanding and strong foundation is at an all-time high.

Tabtor Math is tailored to the needs of every student. The use of digital-paper technology allows sharing of student work, grading, video tutorials and adaptive analytics. Students enrolled in the program across the US have shown between twenty and thirty-five percent performance improvement in math in just two months. Tabtor has also received international adoption from Canada, France, Singapore, UK, Nigeria, Ghana, Germany, Belgium, New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

As part of the global launch, Tabtor is continuing to offer its two-week free trial for a limited time. Visit for more information.

Lexia Learning Releases Lexia Reading Core5 for Students of All Abilities in Grades Pre-K–5

Lexia Learning has announced that Lexia Reading Core5, a pre-K–5 technology-based reading program designed specifically to help students of all abilities meet the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), is now available via web browser, as an app for the iPad and as a desktop download.Developed by Lexia Learning, the program and its supporting printed materials provide structured, sequential, scaffolded instruction that empowers students in grades pre-K–5 to accelerate their mastery of skills and achieve higher levels of proficiency.

Lexia Reading Core5 expands the scope of the Lexia Reading program by covering six areas of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, automaticity/fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

The program creates personalized learning paths for every student, providing explicit instruction and immediate corrective feedback. Students work independently in 18 levels of fun, self-paced activities that take them on an adventure around the world. Throughout the program, students interact with complex text as they develop critical listening and reading comprehension skills.

If a student struggles with a particular activity, he or she is presented with a scaffolded approach to mastering the relevant skill. If the student continues to struggle, he or she receives skill-specific, explicit instruction online, and if necessary, teacher-led instruction using Lexia’s scripted lesson materials. This personalized approach simplifies differentiated instruction, enabling at-risk students to close the gap more quickly and helping on-level and advanced students to continue to progress with support from their teacher as needed.

As students work in the program, Lexia’s proprietary Assessment Without Testing technology gathers norm-referenced performance data—without stopping the flow of instruction to administer a test—and adjusts each student’s learning path accordingly. Teachers and administrators receive real-time reports on individual student progress toward CCSS mastery, as well as reports indicating each student’s probability of meeting end-of-year, grade-level benchmarks. The system also generates individualized action plans recommending interventions and the proper intensity of instruction necessary to improve student performance and meet benchmarks.

Customers can access the browser-based version of Lexia Reading Core5 at, and the app is available in the iTunes App Store at Google Chrome users can access the program at
