ASCD Expands Support for Common Core State Standards Implementation with New Professional Development Resources and Events

ASCD has expanded support for Common Core State Standards implementation with a new two-day institute series and a PD In Focus channel dedicated exclusively to the topic.

The new series of two-day institutes focuses on the theme "Leading the Change to Common Core State Standards: Essential Tools for School and District Leaders" and addresses how superintendents, principals, and key administrators can best implement the new standards in their schools and school systems.

In addition to offering education leaders an in-depth perspective on the concrete resources, strategies, and processes needed to implement the new standards, these two-day institutes prepare participants to

* Enact a collaborative program review of desired and existing practices;

* Use criteria and rubrics to guide the process of implementation of the Common Core State Standards;

* Use data teams to drive improvement of instruction;

* Use walk-throughs to provide feedback and to generate collaborative dialogue about practices; and

* Plan to take the Common Core State Standards to routine use in every classroom.

Educators can attend the institute on leadership and the Common Core State Standards in one of five cities on the following dates:

August 2-3, 2012, in Los Angeles, Calif.

August 6-7, 2012, in Washington, D.C.

August 9-10, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nev.

August 9-10, 2012, in Philadelphia, Pa.

August 13-14, 2012, in Detroit, Mich.

The "Leading the Change to Common Core State Standards: Essential Tools for School and District Leaders" series will be led by nationally known education experts Judy Carr, Sue Beers, and Deborah Childs-Bowen. Carr, an ASCD author, has extensive experience working with schools, districts, state agencies, and education organizations on a variety of professional development and curriculum projects. Beers is also an ASCD author who has worked with the Council of Chief State School Officers and other organizations nationwide to assist educators with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Childs-Bowen is the founder of Creative Minds Enterprise and specializes in program planning and evaluation, as well as professional development for preservice and inservice teachers and administrators.

ASCD has also launched a new PD In Focus channel dedicated to helping educators implement the new Common Core State Standards. The PD In Focus online professional development tool offers educators on-demand access to hundreds of hours of high-impact videos, as well as related resources and activities.

Designed to bring practical classroom applications to life, the PD In Focus tool couples examples from contemporary teaching with insights from some of the most important voices in education today. With powerful search capabilities and discreet tagging, the PD In Focus tool helps users find the digital professional development material most relevant to their needs. Because it is web-based, users can access this powerful resource anywhere with an Internet connection, anytime they need it-including from mobile devices and tablets.

The new PD In Focus channel offers a number of instructive video clips on a variety of subjects related to Common Core State Standards implementation. In addition, the channel contains testimonials and overviews from teachers and experts, plus classroom footage of lessons actively incorporating the new standards into instruction. ASCD will continue to update this content on a regular basis.

EBSCO Publishing Releases EBSCOhost Collection Manager

EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) has announced the release of EBSCOhost Collection Manager (ECM). ECM can be used to search or browse for ebooks and audiobooks by title, author, publisher and more or make selections from the Subject Sets or Featured Collections created by EBSCO's collection development experts. ECM can also help libraries create and manage lists of titles they want to expose to patron drive acquisition (PDA), manage deposits and determine which ownership models to apply to the various ebooks and audiobooks in their collection.

EBSCOhost Collection Manager allows staff to be designated as selectors or approvers and lets them build lists and modify their requests based on their budgets. ECM can be used to determine which titles to purchase outright through the available access models and to select which titles to expose to end users through PDA.

ECM users can establish lists based on subjects and allow the collection development staff (selectors) to specify which titles are needed while the approvers maintain the right to make purchasing decisions. Since ECM is also used to set up and maintain a library's PDA program and manage the deposits, librarians can use it to add additional content to the library catalog and allow patron interest to drive acquisition.

As ECM expands, it will also be used to manage profiles, lease options and Smart PDA - which allows patron usage to trigger access upgrades or leases, ensuring end users never encounter an ebook or audiobook that is "checked out" while also helping libraries keep their ebook and audiobook costs in check.

More information is available at: www.ebscohost.com/ebooks or http://support.ebsco.com/ebooks/ecm.
