Gale Looks to Unmask the Next Librarian Superheroes

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, has announced the launch of the second annual Are you a Librarian Superhero? contest to recognize the often heroic efforts put forth by librarians around the country. Looking to build on the success of last year's contest, during which over 800 nominations were received, Gale is again calling on everyone - fellow librarians, library patrons, students and school administrators - to nominate a superhero librarian who is making a real difference for their library and community. A panel of Cengage Learning employees will choose the top four superhero librarians who will be recognized at the American Library Association's annual meeting. The winners will have a cartoon superhero character created in their likeness and, in the Gale booth at ALA, will be commemorated with cartoon figures, a comic strip and a celebration.

What:     Gale Are You a Librarian Superhero? Contest

Submissions need to include basic information about their librarian - full name, library name, and most importantly, what is super about them.

Who:      All public, special, school and academic librarians in the U.S. and Canada, and the patrons, colleagues and friends who believe they are superheroes.

When:    Call for nominations is open February 1- March 31, 2012. Winners will be announced at the Gale booth during the American Library Association's annual meeting on June 21-26, 2012 in Anaheim, CA.

Where:   Librarians can nominate themselves or their peers by logging on to https://new.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_8jrDs9W5jvibpTm&Preview=Survey&BrandID=cengage

Why:      Librarians go to extraordinary lengths every day for their patrons. To celebrate those feats of greatness and encourage others, Gale will honor librarians everywhere by unmasking just a few of the superheroes among us.

Details:  Please contact Kristina Massari at kristina.massari@cengage.com for more information or with questions about the contest.

Adobe Photoshop Touch Now Available for iPad

Adobe Systems has announced that Adobe Photoshop Touch is now available for iPad 2, via the iTunes App Store. Adobe Photoshop Touch offers core Photoshop features, as well as new capabilities for creating and sharing in an app custom-built for tablets. The app is a central component of Adobe Touch Apps, a family of six intuitive touch screen applications, inspired by Adobe Creative Suite software. iPad versions of the other Adobe Touch Apps are expected later this year.

Photoshop Touch gives users the ability to combine multiple photos into layered images, make essential edits and apply professional effects to create beautiful artwork, touch up photos, paint, lay out ideas and much more. The Scribble Selection Tool allows users to easily extract objects in an image by simply scribbling on what to keep, and then what to remove. With Refine Edge technology from Photoshop, even hard-to-select areas with soft edges are easily captured when making selections. Photoshop Touch helps users quickly find images and share creations through integration with Facebook and Google Image Search.

In addition to Photoshop Touch, Adobe expects to release the following touch apps for the iPad in the coming months: Adobe Collage for moodboards; Adobe Debut for presenting and reviewing creative work; Adobe Ideas for sketching; Adobe Kuler for exploring color themes; and Adobe Proto for website and mobile app prototyping.

myON reader from Capstone Digital Goes Mobile

Capstone Digital has announced the launch of new mobile capabilities for myON reader. The personalized literacy environment that provides access to its large integrated library of digital books with multimedia supports is now available on Kindle Fire. myON reader users can securely login through myON.com and have full access to the platform using the Amazon tablet. This is the first of many mobile initiatives to launch from Capstone Digital in 2012.

Launched in 2011, myON reader has been implemented in nearly 1,000 schools nationwide. The literacy environment provides online access to more than 2,500 books with multimedia supports (embedded dictionary, highlighting and audio), customized to a student's interest and reading ability as measured by the Lexile Framework for reading. To personalize the reading experience further, myON reader develops an individual profile for each student based on interests and reading ability. The online platform then generates a recommended book list to encourage students to read more and further improve their reading skills.

In addition to customizing the reading experience, myON reader furnishes a collaborative reading environment in which students, educators and parents work together to support student reading performance. The online platform uses cloud-based technology to connect school and home through anytime, anywhere access to an expanding library of digital books, and to provide a safe, social network where students can read, rate and review digital books, and recommend them to classmates.

The mobile version of myON reader leverages the Amazon Silk browser for a faster browsing experience on Kindle Fire, which is the second-most-used tablet in the education market.
