THE PIPELINE: Tips 2.0--What’s Hot? How Do I Learn That?

If there’s a refrain I hear too often, it’s that many of us feel it’s impossible to keep up and learn all this new stuff in technology and learning. First, it’s not necessary to know everything. It just isn’t. Then again, it’s very useful and professional to at least have an understanding of the tools that are emerging. It’s also great to know a few tools in-depth and to be able to use them in our practice.

So I thought I’d devote this month’s column to a few sites that I find useful to quickly orient myself to some of the Web 2.0 technologies. It is so easy to spend a few minutes orienting myself to new tools and ideas during simple moments in the day—15 minutes here and there. Even when I have already played with or experienced some of these tools, I always learn something new from these sites. These sites also cover a range of styles—visual, auditory, text, experiential—which is neat too.

Perhaps everyone knows about these cool free reports from EDUCAUSE, but just in case, I’m including a list to see if there’s anything you might find interesting or useful. The EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative produces a regular series of reports under the theme "7 Things You Should Know About …" These are short, simple, and concise pieces about learning technologies that are becoming important or that show great potential. Each available PDF focuses on a single technology and covers what it is, how it works, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. Here are some of the 7 Things report titles:
