World Book Kids, an online product designed for younger users, English-language learners, and reluctant readers, offers simple navigation, easy to read content, bright colors, and bold graphics. The site includes thousands of illustrations, diagrams, and maps that support thousands of articles selected for their appeal and relationship to curriculum standards.

Based on World Book's Student Discovery Encyclopedia, World Book Kids was created in partnership with Douglas Love, the author of more than 25 best-selling children's activity books, plays, and educational television programs, including Imagination Station, Out of the Box, and Jammin' Animals.

The site's subject areas include People, Plants and Animals, Places, History and Government, Science and Mathematics, Arts, World Religion, and Sports and Hobbies. Also offered are sections titled Maps, Dictionary, and Pictures.

An interactive online atlas covers the globe, linking from map to map. The dictionary contains approximately 250,000 entries. The World Book Quick Facts feature provides tabular data about states, pro-vinces, countries, and important dates. Editor-selected age-appropriate Web sites are accessible at the bottom of article pages.

Hundreds of audio files are linked to articles, including clips of bird songs, popular and classical music, national anthems, and more. An audio feature "reads" aloud the subject area and activity categories when the cursor is moved over the text. The audio can be turned on or off by clicking on the loudspeaker icon appearing at the top of every page.

The Activities area includes 25 hands-on activities allocated among the categories of Make It, Think It, and Be It. Each provides an opportunity to learn more about World Book topics. Every student activity includes a Teach It section with resources for educators, including correlations to standards, discussion questions, an evaluation matrix, and printable activity worksheets. The activities are available for download as PDF files.

An online tutorial, hosted by an animated puppy named Atlas, provides an overview of the site. The tutorial demonstrates the site's search and subject browse navigation, shows article features, and describes the hands-on activities. World Book Kids is part of the World Book Online Reference Center product suite. A link to the World Book Online Reference Center is accessible from the blue box at the bottom of World Book Kids search results and article pages.
