Online Tsunami Science Project Needs U.S. High School Science Teachers

iEARN-USA is recruiting American high school science teachers to work online with peers in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand on an English-language project appropriate for science and geography classes or after school and community programs.

The project, the Young Scientists Tsunami Collaboration, brings together students in four countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the United States) for an online collaboration.

The effort focuses on the science of tsunamis, including the role of science and technology in disaster relief, preparedness efforts and examinations of the effects of tsunamis on the environment.

For the project, iEARN will create a new specific online professional development course to provide expertise and support for the science teachers involved in the project. The course will provide in-depth information on ways to use different types of technologies to enable students to interact. After completing the course, the educators will involve their students in direct interaction online with peers in the other participating countries. Together they will develop an activity for the tsunami collaboration.

The project is funded by the U.S. Oceans Bureau of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. embassies abroad.
