ASCD has announced new one-and two-day Professional Development Institutes supporting educators nationwide as they implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

The new series of one-day institutes is titled Using Formative Assessment to Meet the Demands of the Common Core and supports educators implementing the CCSS in linking formative assessments with quality instruction to deepen content knowledge. Attendees to this institute will:

  • Discover how to link classroom formative assessment practices to instructional shifts in the new standards for English language arts and mathematics.

  • Explore the ways in which assessment tasks can inform instruction.

  • Understand how to construct an error analysis tool aligned with the Common Core standards.

This series commences April 22 in Baltimore, MD, with nine sessions in cities nationwide through June 14. For more information; registration information; and a complete list of dates, locations and presenters; visit this Professional Development Institute's web page.

The new series of two-day institutes, called "Common Core and the Understanding by Design Framework: Planning Units with the End in Mind," draws on the work of popular ASCD authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. These institutes focus on showing participants how to unpack the CCSS and create high-quality curricula and assessments needed to prepare students for the demands of college and the workplace. This series will help educators who want to:

  • Understand the long-term transfer goals embedded in the Common Core standards that need to work their way into daily lessons.

  • Learn how to get to the big ideas of the standards as well as discrete knowledge and skills.

  • Explore ways to teach for understanding and transfer, not just coverage of standards.

  • Get help creating authentic performance tasks and traditional assessments.

This series launches April 25–26 in Columbus, OH, with six sessions through June 20–21. For more information; registration information; and a complete list of dates, locations and presenters; visit this Professional Development Institute's web page.
