A LOOK AT ... Subscription Websites

Subscription web services for education offer a fascinating variety of products and approaches for teachers, parents, students, and school systems. Some services provide grade book and student information systems, others offer assessment and learning management platforms, and some feature classroom resources including lesson plans, videos, digital tools, activities, and games.

While it’s true that material similar to content offered by some subscription services may be found on the internet at no cost, in most cases the free sites tend to be poor in quality and filled with advertising. Overall, subscription-based web services are well worth the price due to their usually superior content, support, development, and security and the avoidance of ads.

This article takes a look at a representative sampling of subscription-based websites that are appropriate for use in K–12 classrooms. This overview was designed as a starting place for a consideration of web subscriptions. Keep in mind that nearly every subscription website offers a free trial period prior to the purchase of a subscription. This free sampling opportunity can help you make certain that your subscription will meet your expectations and your needs.
