For September 1, 2006: Here's an intriguing site associated with the National Park Service's Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area (one of 27 federally designated heritage areas in the nation). Via CampSilos and its CampSilos History Center Excursion, your students can picture themselves as curators, historians, and archivists in a museum. Have your students choose an activity such as telling the story of industrialization in Iowa during the 1800s and early 1900s. After they complete the assignment, they will understand the roles of the curator and historian plus the research process necessary for gathering information. These activities can be adapted for any community, so be sure to visit this site for ideas.
