For January 15, 2007: Span It: A Bridge Building Game, brought to you courtesy of global megacontractor Bechtel Corporation, is a Shockwave-based, just-for-fun engineering simulation. The object of the game is to build a bridge over a river that supports the load under each level's particular conditions (level 1--you've got to support a bicycle; level 2--a truck; level 3--a freight train!) and stays within budget each time. Although many principals of bridge construction are introduced, Bechtel notes it is not a thorough study of the subject. Nevertheless, it will be a fun way for students to learn about the rudimentary components of bridges.
