For November 1, 2011: This year marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. To commemorate the event, many museums are presenting exhibits that display artifacts such as uniforms, weapons, and personal accounts from the battlefield. The National Portrait Gallery's CivilWar@Smithsonian features a wide array of primary sources from photographs to documents. Collections include slavery and abolition, soldiering, biographies of leaders, weapons, cavalries, navies, Abraham Lincoln, Winslow Homer, Mathew Brady, and much more. The exhibit also offers a unique view of the institution's political position during the war. Rounding out the Website are a timeline and resources for further research.
